Etymology: Diminutive form of the generic name Gloxinia

Synonyms: Kohleria sect. Gloxinella H.E.Moore (1954).

Infrafamilial position: Gesnerioid Gesneriaceae (Gesnerioideae) - Gloxinieae.

Corolla alvender, campanulate, limb of subequal lobes. Stamens 4; anthers coherent. Nectary annular, sometimes slightly 5-lobed. Ovary inferior; stigma broadly stomatomorphic or obscurely bilobed. Chromosome number:  2n = 26.

Species names (incl. publication and synonyms): See Skog, L.E. & J.K. Boggan. 2005: World checklist of Gesneriaceae: http://persoon.si.edu/Gesneriaceae/Checklist.

Type and only species: Gloxinella lindeniana (Regel) Roalson & Boggan

Distribution: For long, the species was known only from cultivated material of unknown origin, but recently it has been re-discovered in Peru (Cajamarca).

Ecology: Probably as in Gloxinia.

Notes: G. lindeniana has bounced between Gloxinia and Kohleria for a long time. In the latter genus it was accommodated in a distinct section (K. sect. Gloxinella H.E.Moore). According to molecular data, it fits to neither of those genera. Therefore, the section was raised to generic rank (Roalson et al. 2005a,b, Boggan 2006).
