Chautemsia

Full name and orig. publication: Chautemsia A.O.Araujo & V.C.Souza, in: Araujo, A.O., Souza V.C. & M. Perret, Taxon 59(1): 207 (Feb 2010).

Etymology: Named for Alain Chautems, an acknowledged Swiss taxonomist specialised in neotropical Gesneriaceae.

Synonyme: -

Infrafamilial position: Gesnerioid Gesneriaceae (Gesnerioideae) – Gloxinieae.

Description: Perennial herbs with scaly rhizomes. Stems erect, unbranched, usually comprising only 3–4 nodes. Leaves opposite, sometimes strongly unequal in a pair, petiolate, lamina to broadly elliptic (to orbicular), apex acute or obtuse, base cuneate or attenuate, margin serrate, adaxial and abaxial leaf surface pubescent, 4–5 pairs of side veins. Flowers solitary in leaf axils, without bracteoles. Sepals free to base, elliptic to obovate, margin entire. Corolla infundibuliform-cylindrical, aestivation imbricate, tube white to white-yellowish; throat not constricted, yellow; lobes white, broadly depressed-ovate with entire or slightly sinuate margins. Stamens 4, included, filaments glabrous, anthers all coherent, opening by longitudinal slits, staminode present. Nectary of 5 long, finger-like, separate glands. Ovary inferior; style bearing a stomatomorphic stigma. Capsule ellipsoid, apex erect, fleshy, dehiscing only dorsally and splitting the hypanthium to the base. Seeds without enlarged funicle.

Chromosome number: unknown

Type species: Chautemsia calcicola A.O.Araujo & V.C.Souza

Distribution: Brazil (Minas Garais).

Ecology: Growing on limestone outcrops in remnants of deciduous forest.

Notes: This recently described genus belongs clearly to the tribe Gloxinieae, but reveals an uncommon combination of characters such as five finger-like nectar glands, solitary flowers in leaf axils, stomatomorphic stigma and fleshy plagiocarpic capsule opening only on the dorsal side. DNA data (from 5 loci) place the genus as sister to a clade comprising Mandirola and Goyazia, or, alternatively, in a clade with Gloxiniopsis.
